Question: “Would you tell me please which way I ought to go from here?”
That depends on a good deal where you want to get to. “I don’t much care where.”
Then, it does not matter which way you go?
That was the conversation between Alice and the Cat in Alice in the Wonderland. Chapter 6, Pigs and Pepper
The next is between Alice and the Caterpillar.
Who are you?” said the Caterpillar….
Alice replied, rather shyly, “I—I hardly know, Sir, just at present
—at least I know who I was when I got up this morning, but I think
I must have been changed several times since then - Chapter 5, Advice From Caterpillar
The Alice syndrome is not just for children, it is common among adults and leaders. There are many people who are just going through the day-to-day things to survive the day and then repeat the same thing the following day without regard to who they are in relation to the demand of their profession.
As a leader, if you don’t know who you are in your personal identity, you are likely to make decision that are out of alignment with who God has created you to be. Decision making is the hall mark of leadership and to be decisive as leader, begins first by knowing our True Self.
For executive leadership, this is even more important. A leader must be guided in true personhood before leading an organization successfully. If there is a gap between a leader’s personal life and professional life, it will affect relationship inside and relationship outside the business and ultimately the value of the organization.
As much as it is hard for some leaders to admit, it is true that for some leaders, professional identity comes much easier than personal identity. And there is a reason why. There are some things about our personal lives that we would rather separate from our professional lives. But those things are divine imprints, designed to make us better and add value to our organization if we care to address them. How many times have you been in a meeting where people begin to introduce themselves as CEO, CFO, CPA of so and so company?
If we want to fulfill our purpose as leaders in the 21st century, we must begin to integrate our personal and professional identities. We must begin to be honest with ourselves, be kind and be self-caring. We must be comfortable in our True Self in the way God created us according to His Vision, Intent and Purpose.
If we do not self-care, we leave room for those side of our lives to rear their ugly head in our relationship which devalues. It is the difference between authentic leadership, counterfeit, or imposter leadership.
